A Sick Old Man and a Puzzle

Friday October 27

Breakfast and a Meeting

Vanderboren family ring
The companions meet with Lavinia in the common room of the Fox and the Hound and go over the details of their mission to reclaim her families ship, the Blue Nixie. After returning her family signet ring and discussing the important information, they decide to head directly to the Harbormaster's Manor to deal with him directly. After that, Lavinia wishes the group to accompany her on a trip to Castle Teraknian to visit her family vault beneath the castle in hopes of recovering her family wealth.

The group makes their way to the Azure District via one of the water taxi gondolas and are greeted by some armed House Islaran guards. The guards attempt to turn the party away, directing them toward either Castle Teraknian or the numerous harbor scribes that run the day to day business of the harbor. Fortis steps up his negotiation game and uses mind control magic to cause the guard to do his bidding.

The guard leads the group inside and is in the process of taking them to see the Harbormaster in person when they are intercepted by the House Islaran Steward. He at first tries to turn them away as well, but is convinced to allow an audience when Fortis and Arn present information on magical healing and knowledge of trade laws.

Arn and Lavinia speak to the Stuart the Steward about the issues in the harbor while Silver and Fortis go into see the Harbormaster. Moonscar follows into the bedroom but stays back near the wall. Seeker remains in the hallway, near Arn and Lavinia but not involved with their conversation with Stuart. The Harbormaster, Keltar Islaran, is a sick, tired and old man, on the verge of death. He initially accuses Fortis of being an assassin sent by his rival, Heldrath Kellani, then it becomes quite clear that the old man is not fully in command of his faculties. The group speaks to Steward Stuart for a few more minutes, comes to an agreement on the fines to be paid by Lavinia for the Blue Nixie and the group leaves. Lavinia passes some of the saved tax coin out to the group as a thank you for services rendered and promises more once the vault is opened.

Castle Teraknian and the Vault

Lavinia then takes the party to Castle Teraknian and they enter the Noble Vaults, deep down below the island castle. Using her family ring to gain access, the party descends to the vault and enters. The many pillared room appears empty except for a strange metal snake that is laying in a heap on the floor. The space is examined thoroughly and carefully by the assembled companions but nothing of interest is found.

The group shares the note they had also found with the ring, showing Lavinia the strange beast riddle it contained. She was unsure of what any of it meant, just as they were. At this time, Silver, who had been careful to reveal her true form up until this point, makes the transformation back into a small silver Dragon. This change terrifies Lavinia and the party has to take some time to calm her down, all the while continuing to look for clues about what else might lie in this vault.

Meeting Ms. Vanderboren

Thursday October 26

Enter Lavinia

As the Guardians of Bletherad gather in the Fox and Hound on their first evening in Essanos, they are approached by the very person they had been seeking, Lavinia Vanderboren. Lavinia is accompanied by an older Gnomish woman named Kora, her servant.

Lavinia and the Guardians talk for a while, establishing exactly who everyone is and why they have sought each other out, though no clear connection between Lavinia and the bigger happenings in the world can be made. Lavinia explains that she has experienced some financial difficulties since returning to Essanos and is trying to rebuild and reclaim her family's former status and wealth in hopes of pledging it to helping the Library in any way she can.

She tells the Guardians that her most immediate concern happens to be a ship that is owned by her family but currently impounded by the Harbormaster for failure to pay taxes and maintenance. She explains that she has in fact paid the fees but believes that the unsavory agent of the Harbormaster may have taken the payment and kept it for himself. She also believes that her father's family signet ring may be aboard the ship, the Blue Nixie, and with the ring, she would be able to access her family's vault located under Castle Teraknian, which hopefully still contains the wealth she believes it holds.

The group vows to help her with regaining the ship and her family fortune and quickly sets to making a plan, coming up with several avenues of action from using the law, stealing the ship back or a combination of both. They settle their unnecessary gear in their rooms and head off toward the docks. Valinya states that she will remain at the Fox and Hound as she is not feeling well.
The Guardians head to the docks for some answers.

To the Docks

Once at the docks, the group finds one of the harbor scribes and begin questioning him about the ship and the man Lavinia named as Soller Vark. After some time, they garner a bit of information from him, but not enough to act upon immediately. He continually refers them to the Harbormaster's Office the following day. He eventually tells them where they can find the ship and then hurries on about his business.

As the Guardians are heading away, the scribes partner, a Harbor guard, comes back around and pulls the party aside. He tells them quietly that he believes that this Vark fellow is a bad sort and giving Harbormaster Islaran a bad name. He says the Blue Nixie isn't tied up where it is supposed to be, but is in fact out in the harbor and he has heard rumor on the waterfront that it is going to be pulling anchor sometime later that night.

He points out into the harbor to a ship sized fogbank with several masts sticking up out of it. He bids them good evening and then hurries off to catch up with the scribe. The party quickly assess the situation and begins planning for getting everyone out to the ship to check it out.
Lavinia's ship is not moored where it is supposed to be and is surrounded by a magical fog!
