Discussing Extermination Tactics

Soldain 3rd Klarmont

Searching the Spider's Lair

The remaining Rhagodessa was tracked and defeated easily while Kifein escorted the wounded warrior back to the encampment. After the beast is dead, Griffin notes that it appears to have been heading back to its lair and after a short while, the Grey Company finds itself standing under a rocky outcropping with what looks like a small cave opening directly above their heads about 20 feet up. Griffin thinks he could climb up to that height, but doing the 10 feet of vertical climb from the rock face out to where the lair was would be quite difficult without the proper equipment. Magic will be the best and safest way to get up there, though all the mages have nearly tapped out their magical reserves. Draven reminds everyone that he has his Boots of Levitation that will allow him to float up to the cave mouth.

Remar, his spell only good for another 20 heartbeats or so before it’ll need to be renewed, looks around as he floats over to and above Griffin.  “Hey Griff.  Remind me what you’re wanting to do in a spider’s nest again?  Do you think there’s treasure in there?  Should I renew my flight spell, which takes less out of me then starting it back up from scratch, or land?
Iris hefts her loaded crossbow and looks at Griffin, “I’m willing to use this, but I’m essentially exhausted, magically speaking.  I would prefer to regroup after an extended rest...unless Remar can perform another dynamic fire display, like the last one.” She turns to Remar and says a bit quieter, “That really was quite impressive!”

Even in the dim lighting, the Alphatian’s fiery blush can be seen floating above the party.  “Thank you Iris.  I...I can do much more, but as you said, maybe a rest would be most prudent before rushing in at this point.  I’m not sure if pressing the attack when not at the advantage given these details is wise.  Do you agree Griffin?”  Remar wonders if his silent friend is lost in thought or in the grips of psyching himself up to potentially climb into a nest full of giant spiders.

The group decides that a rest would be the best course of action at this point. They find a spot not far from the spider lair and everyone sits down to regain some energy. Thirty minutes go by and there is no activity coming or going at the spider’s cave. Ree and Iris are still somewhat worn out from their previous spellcasting endeavors but everyone else is refreshed.

“Okay, hopefully everyone has managed to catch their breath a bit. I’d still like to check out the lair. Bring a torch or something in case there are eggs or,” and he shudders, “babies. If there’s loot, great, but I see this as more of a ‘making sure our new friends are safe from this threat.’”

“Ooooooohhhhhaaaaawwwwww.”  Unsuccessfully trying to stifle a yawn while stretching and trying to acknowledge this line of logic, the raven-haired mage nods an apology at Griffin for his mouth-agape response.  “If we aren’t really thinking there is treasure and we just want to make quick work of this one nest as a gesture...mind you, if there is one nest of these there are probably a bunch more the Hutaakan will still have to worry about...do you want me to just fill the nest with fire?  Aim it on in from the outside and let loose before attempting to crawl on in there?”

Draven nods, looking up at the dark hole in the rock. “Yes, that would be one way to do it. How would you know how much fire to send up there though? Just guess and send up a little more just in case? I say do it, light ‘em up!”

He has a good point ya know?

Yep.  But I know fire.
“Well...I think there are two approaches.

Option 1 - Magic fire:  Fast option.  Varied results.  Doesn’t need air or fuel.  I can just keep expanding it until it fills the full volume of the place.  We’ll know it has if and when we see fire coming out from other parts or pushing back out this hole...not to mention the potential of giant flaming spiders rushing out.”  Remar gives a bearded smile.

Option 2 - Real fire:  Slow option.  Definite burnination.  Needs fuels...wood and dry grass and such and thermodynamics.  We’d need to stack some wood in there and start a fire.  Once started, we’d need to see where else any smoke comes out.  If we’re lucky, we’ll see it coming from another entrance like this and note it.  Then we’d start adding a lot of dry grass ahead of this fire in this hole...oh and fine grain or sawdust if we have it.  After that, we really start to feed and stoke this fire with wood.  The hot air from it will exit through to the other entrance or exit.  This will cause a suction that will draw fresh air in through here, further stoking the fire.  This will ignite the other lighter fuels, like the twigs, grasses, grains, and sawdust and carry it toward the other entrance.  This will then in turn, quickly walk the fire all the way through the place, bringing in plenty of fresh air for combustion.  And then, a cycle develops:  The hotter the fire gets, the more air is drawn down into the fire pit – making the fire hotter, and hotter, and hotter.  Depending on what this place is made out of, it can turn it into something like a smelter.”

Well done.

Well...thank you!

Na...ya misunderstan’ meh.  I like em well-done!

He clears his throat and then continues excitedly.  “So, a couple minutes with option 1 and a few hours with option 2 assuming we can get all the right resources.  But hey, we are on the plain so plenty of those right?  I’d really like to do Option 2.”

The Alphatian looks around at the staring faces.

“S...s...so, the reason I like option 2 is that, well...as I mentioned above there are likely more of these the Hutaakan will have to deal with.  If we are truly looking to help them and be allies, we could show them how to do option 2 themselves and they can handle the other imminent spider nests.”

Griffin shakes his head and whistles. “Whew, I knew you liked fire, but… whoa. That sounds pretty effective.” He frowns. “And I know I said that this was primarily to remove the spider threat for our new friends, and not for the loot.” He pauses, “But if there were loot, would there be any left after either option? Seems like it’d be a shame is all I’m saying.”

Remar thinks a moment and then asks. “What do you consider loot in this case Griffin?  Magical things?  I like magical things.  I’m not sure as to the likelihood of finding something like that in a spider’s den though, but yeah maybe these Hutaakan have such things, right?

“And as you already know,” Remar blushes a little, “I do like silver, gold, and the like as well.  The thing about those metals, along with iron (though you can get it hotter with iron) is that they soften in a smelter, but not as fast as slag.  Any impure stuff like slag will melt first and then head for the low points like run-off.  The precious stuff would soften, and potentially lump all together, but still be salvageable for it’s raw value I’d think.”    He flashes another smile.  “The things we learn when forced to artificially stoke fires for desperate army smiths, eh?”

“Maybe we can sorta do both though?  Less fire, more infiltration for this one if that’s your idea Griffin, and then I can show these people how to burn them out like I was explaining?  Of course any loot in those nests would end up with that same melty fate...”

Griffin nods. “Good to know. So the precious metals, if there are any, might not melt and run together. If they did, depending on the ratios, we could get something mostly gold, or possibly something more like electrum. And anything valuable that is not metal is pretty much toast, though. So I guess we have to weigh the risks versus the rewards. Option 1 sounds like really low risk, in return for probably low reward. Option 2 - roughly the same. Option 3 - more discerning, probably much less safe, and even though likely just as unprofitable, has a slim chance of reaping greater benefits than Options 1 or 2.”

“I’d find it hard to argue against burning the creatures out proactively.”  Draven raises his hand ceremoniously and continues.  “Should there be valuables among the remains of the spiders’ victims, let those be buried with them, and these caverns become their pyres.”

“What if someone is still alive in there? The victims, I mean,” Iris says.  “Perhaps we should do a bit of infiltration, just to be sure. They were dragging the Hutaakan warrior back to their nest, still living.”

“Hmmm.  I’d think spiders like these would just hunt when their stores are empty.  I don’t see them keeping larders per say.” Remar adds.  “Besides, though they’ll obviously grab a Hutaakan, I’d have to hope that most of their meals are animals, large insects, and other spiders just smaller than themselves.  Iris and Draven, are either of you able to tell if anything humanoid-like is alive in there through the rocks?  Can you check if that Hutaakan priestess can?  If not...I still vote we get things set up for a crab-bake unless Griffin really wants to go in there.”

“I am indeed blessed to have been given the gift of seeing the fire of life, but like all things the Immortals demand a price for it.  Still, I would spare us the risk of going into the warren if I might.”  Draven gazes on the spider-nest, considering it’s size.

Griffin listens to his team, then thinks for a minute. “Okay, Remar, why don’t you show the Hutaakans how we do things downtown. Go Option 1.”

“While he does that, I can check for life within the nest - it should not prove too terribly taxing.”

With a confused look on his face Remar scratches his chin.  “But Griffin,  there’s nothing to show them with Option 1:  Magic Fire.  I just sort of...well...just do it.  Did you mean for me to show them Option 2 down in their town...wherever that is...so that they can clear out all the many giant spider nests and effectively defend themselves against them in the future?”

Remar winks at Griffin and glances hopefully at Iris.  “If you really meant Option 2 Griffin, perhaps I could *ehem* borrow...um...someone who I can speak through that has a better command of the languages they understand than I do, and that isn’t busy with something at the moment?  I mean, I don’t know who of our company would be interested in taking on the burden of the rigorous cultural exchange necessary to communicate the mechanics of what I describe, all the while fine-tuning their cultural understandings of this ancient race...”

Iris involuntarily rolls her eyes, chuckles, and says, “Of course I'd be happy to translate, Remar. No need to fluff my ego.” She smirks.

Draven takes a step away from his friends, facing the spider nest and bowing his head. He murmurs a prayer to the Twelve, and to Tarastia in particular to open his sight to the life energies around him.  He raises his head, and there is the familiar sense of presence, of attention, as something larger than all of them seems to turn it’s attention their way for just an instant. Draven stares at the nest, eyes dimly lit from within.  After a moment, he bows his head again, a joyous smile briefly flitting across his stern face as he lets go his gift and allows the vision to fade.  He murmurs a prayer of thanks to Tarastia, and glances back to the others.

“We may proceed.” he says “there is no thinking life within the... “ his words falter as Remar breaks in.

Before Griffin can further clarify, the Alphatian takes Iris’ hand and trots off in the direction of the Hutaakan priestess.  “Yeah, that’s great Draven!  This way, Iris, this way!”

The young cleric looks wryly at Griffin, grinning and shrugging his shoulders as if to say ‘well, what can you do…?’ as The Remar leads Iris away.

Griffin, Draven and Ree all take a seat and relax on the side of the valley, keeping an eye on the spider lair.

Into the Ravine

Soldain 3rd Klarmont

The Grey Company, in their attempt to help the Hutaakans, head up into a dark ravine, searching for a wounded Hutaakan warrior that has been dragged off by a giant spider like creature called a rhagodessa. The Company has tracked the creatures to a dark, overgrown ravine.

Remar and Iris use their magic to enable the key members of the Grey Company to fly in order to gain and keep the upper hand in the search and rescue mission they are on. The rest of the Company approaches on foot through the ravine. Within no time, the rhagodessa are found, as is the wounded and possibly dying Hutaakan warrior.

The Company coordinates its attack from the air using magic and crossbows, expertly flushing the multi-legged beasts from their holes. Draven swoops down to help the injured victim while the others keep the monsters busy. Unexpectedly, the rhagodessa begin to unravel the Comany's plan when they prove to be expert leapers and engage the party in the air.

Draven is able to revive the Hutaakn warrior and the spider-beasts are beaten down into a retreat. Remar then shows the proper way to clear out a spider's nest... burn it to the ground!

Going on a Spider Hunt

Soladain 3 Klarmont

Camping with the Mutts

Camping by the stream
It is dark and still hot when the group arrives in the same location as the previous night. Quickly and efficiently the Grey Company and the Hutaakans begin to set up camp. Seemingly very trusting, the Hutaakans have given everyone back their weapons and give no indication that they are worried about treachery from their new traveling companions. Everyone pitches in and helps set up camp and though still a bit awkward, the Hutaakans are polite and gracious. Hoping to stave off another undead encounter, Remar is just about ready to cast his Mystic Mist spell over the entire area when two Hutaakan soldiers rush up in a panic. They are speaking very fast and in Hutaakan. One of the two minor priests, a female named Kifein, speaks to the warriors and they rush off. She turns to the gathered group. “It is as we feared, the hunter-spiders have come down the slope and attacked us. They are large, bigger than a riding lizard and with many legs. The Rhagodessa, it is called in our tongue. A pair of them assaulted one of our scout groups and carried off a warrior. We must move fast if we are to save him. Please excuse me.” She turns to head off.

Draven frowns, taking an unconscious couple of steps following Kifein before realizing what he’s done and stopping to look after the rest of the group.

“They seem in need; helping would both illuminate our souls and serve to reinforce our alliance, temporary though it may be.  Shall we help?”

Previously resolved to unloading a lot of magical energy, the battlemage is now unsure if he should continue and seems to look a little pent-up.  “Uh, well yeah.  These Hutaakan at least seem good.  I’d probably help them even if not actively trying to get on their good side.  I mean, if Griffin is OK with it.  I could magic-up some flight for those like me that would rather stay at range when dealing with a sizable arachnid when we get closer.”

Rack-nid?  Is tha’ sum sorta magic spell-word?

He then seems to add off to the side, “It means spider, silly.”

Ya know suma them leap, right?  All tha many, grippy legs, and nasty, drippy fangs.  And I hate it when ya walk inta those iky strands of web…”

And then adds again, “Oh good point,” and turns back to the others in the company.  “Some spiders do jump, and if these are of that species and huge they may be able to jump high...flying up a little ways rather than lower for a flaming, straff, bombardment may be safer too.  Anyway, I’d much rather do that sort of magic than a mystic mist.”

Why stop at one or tha otha?

Remar snaps his fingers and looks excited.  “Yeah, right, right!  I could always rest up a little bit when we get back to still do a mist if I get too spent.”  He beams at everyone.

Iris seems about to answer Draven when Remar jumps in.  She watches him and her brows furrow as he begins to mumble (to himself?) when not directly addressing the group.  Good point about that fly spell though.  Guh, I don’t even like your everyday spider.  Iris clears her throat and says, “I believe we should help.  They’ve shown us great trust by returning our weapons and apparently doing nothing to stop those of us with access to magic from using it.” And if this is a test...well...I’m certain that not helping would be considered a solid failure by our Hutaakan hosts. No need to mention that, though.  “Remar, I very much appreciate your offer of flight, though I am able to create that for myself,” she ends with a half-smile.

Gearing Up

Griffin grabs his crossbow and cocks it while he looks around the camp. “Well, okay then. Marcel, Stephan, stay here with the Hutaakan non-coms. We’ll follow Kifein, see what we can do to help.” He thinks for a while. “Remar, Iris, if you’re going to fly, I know it takes a lot out of you. Let’s get closer before you start doing that stuff.”

Draven hefts his shield and murmurs a quiet prayer, then turns to follow Kifein with Griffin, Iris, and Remar.

“Draven.  You seem to be able to communicate with them.”  Remar jerks his thumb in the direction of the jackal-people.  “Could you ask them for more details on these giant spiders?  Do you know if they spin webs, live in trees, cliffs, or crevices, if they have any weaknesses, where the spiders are generally found when not ambushing prey, where the spiders take prey once they have it, etc.  Based on what they say, I might be able to narrow down where they went.”

Draven translates in Traldar for Remar and the young mage realizes that he is beginning to pick up some of the words and basic ideas of the language. Kifein relates that the Rhagodessa are not web spinners, but hunters and jumpers. They prefer to live up in the rocky crags around the lip of the valley and only occasionally come down into the valley. They are believed to normally feed off the hardy mountain goats that  populate the area and are sometimes known to drag off their kills. Other than that, the Hutaakan do not know much else about the large and aggressive creatures.

The gathered members of the Grey Company head off into the darkness after Kifein. The various enchanted items of the Company illuminate the rocky ground in the darkened valley. She leads the way up the slope toward where some torch lights can be seen moving along a ridge.

After a few minutes, two of the Hutaakan warriors approach. One of them gives a slight bow to Kifein then gives her a report. She turns to the Company and translates. “They followed some tracks and blood but have lost the trail in this area. The Rhagodessa are insects, but dangerous and tricky. When they hunt in pairs, they work together. If the warrior was not killed immediately, he may still be alive. They would drag him to a safe place to feed or possibly hide his body somewhere then come back for him later.”

She says a few things to the warrior Hutaakan and the pair of them rush off up the slope into the darkness. “It looks like that end of the ridge full of searchers. We can search along this end if you will help me,” she asks in her heavily accented Traldar.

“I’m no tracker” the young priest says “but should we get close enough, it may be that the divines will show me where your man is - and, at great need, I can petition that they might lend me the gift of prophecy, that I might see where he lies wherever he may be.  If nothing else, I am another set of keen eyes.”

“Let me give it a go first, Brother. Let’s see if Eran’s lessons rubbed off on me.” Griffin begins scanning the ground for any trail sign. “Remar, keep your eyes up. If they’re like spiders, they could try and ambush us from above.” And Draven, let’s go with mundane solutions when we can. Save your miracles for saving our lives!

“Sure thing Griffin!” the Alphatian replies and he begins to really scrutinize his surroundings for any sign or clues that could indicate large spiders were here, where they may have gone...and if they are sneaking up on them right now!

On the Trail

After about a half an hour of searching, through a combination of Remar’s conclusions about giant arachnid behavior, Draven and Iris’s keen observations and Griffin’s tracking skills, the Company believes they have tracked the spiders and their prey to a dark rocky ravine. A painful moan can be heard echoing out of the ravine. Kifein’s ears perk up and her black eyes narrow in the darkness. “That sounds like my warrior, he is still alive. How shall we proceed?” The ground is very broken and rocky around the entrance to the ravine. A dead tree lays across the entrance, forming a sort of bridge from one side of the ravine to the other. The entrance itself is about 4 yards wide at the top, but only 2 yards at best at the bottom. Small bits of vegetation and rocky crags form a partial canopy above the top of the ravine. Access from above by flying individuals will be possible, but not completely easy. Approaching from the sides, over the steep and broken terrain would be possible but slow and dangerous, especially in the dark.
Spider ravine

“Everyone, I’m going to toss some rocks in there in obvious directions, so we can hear what the echoes sound like.  Listen and see if using that, you can tell where the warrior’s moans are coming from.”

Closing his eyes and listening, Remar tries to determine where in the ravine the injured warrior’s moans are coming from.  In order to help with this, he tosses a few stones in different parts of the crevasse to hone in on how their echos are treated from the locations they land and compare it to the Hutaukan’s sounds.

“Has anyone heard of or dealt with creatures like this before? Will flame keep them at bay?  I don’t like normal spiders; the idea of giant varieties is disheartening. Clearly the
Immortals want to ensure our lives are interesting and challenging,” Draven asks nervously.

Battle for the Blue Nixie

Thursday October 26, The Blue Nixie, Essanos Harbor

The battle rages across the deck of the Blue Nixie while a fire rages in the stateroom cabin, apparently started by the rogues that held the ship! The nasty blue-furred Coyle spell-caster that was previously stuck on the cargo net has turned into a body of water and splashed down into the hold. Arn engages some of the remaining foes on deck while Silver and Moonscar move to put the fire out. Valinya and Seeker begin moving toward the hold where new wisps of smoke can be seen.

Down below, the blue-furred Coyle is retreating to the bilge while several other Human and Coyle pirates are starting small fires and releasing what appears to be an entire cargo of contraband animals. One large beast, a dangerous cross between a spider and scorpion has already begun to feast on one of the Coyles it has caught. The fires spread quickly throughout the hold and the Coyle spell-caster disappears under a door. Fortis does his best to follow but cannot keep up with his liquid foe and looses him in the bilge.

Valinya uses her magic to help move some water and Arn to where they can be more useful while Moonscar dumps one of the troughs of water from the deck down onto the conflagration. Arn, Seeker and Silver engage the ravenous beast and are able to dispatch of it without much trouble. The fire is put out and the remainder of the seamen onboard quickly give up the fight. They are all gathered up and taken to the previously burnt stateroom and guarded by Seeker while Fortis, Moonscar and Valinya begin a search of the other cabins. Arn searches the hold and sailors quarters below-decks and Silver does a flyby around the ship looking for any sailors that fled and watching for any other incoming trouble.

Campaign Timeline

The Derro and the Shard

Fireday, 28th of Lamashan

**It was recounted that, while the party had camped the previous evening, Daellin had made a magical trip back to Magnimar to purchase some much needed healing potions.**

The Heroes listened to the information given to them by the unexpectedly friendly underwater Ghoul and decided to approach the Derro from the west, dealing with the Green Slime first. It was quite easy to spot, since they were looking for it, and after several folk were able to sneak past it, it was destroyed by magical fire. The Heroes then thought it was a good idea to deal with the eel’s rumored to be living in the sewer pipes to the east.

The eel lived in the pipe

Using tactical position and magic, they were able to lure the eels out individually and kill them without taking any damage. Daellin’s Blink spell and Calina’s arrows to the eyes were pivotal in this victory.

Next the party followed a passage to the south that went around a corner and up some stairs. The passage ended in a dark balcony overlooking a large room that was lit by glowing blue fungus. A large spiral staircase led down in the center of the room and just past that, a trio of Derro were seemingly arguing with each other. They were watched for some time while an elaborate plan was devised to determine their motivations and get close enough to engage. While Daellin and Kallin backtracked to another passage thought to lead to the Derro chamber, the three targets separated and left the main chamber. Daellin and Kallin followed one of the Derro into some sort of workshop where he was examining some sort of disgusting Flesh Golem made up of rat, spider, troglodyte and Dwarf parts. Daellin moved into position while his companions arrived outside. A brief skirmish ended with the Derro dead and the Golem destroyed.
Derro

They decided to go after each of the other Derro one at a time but on the way to the next door, Samad was suddenly very interested by something across the room… a blank section of the wall. Immediately everyone started searching and Samad revealed a secret door that was quickly opened.

The space behind the door was ancient and had not been recently disturbed, based on the amount of cobwebs and dust present. A giant spider-like creature is poised in the adjacent alcove, very much dead, though well preserved. Samad didn't wait for anyone before brushing the cobwebs aside and heading down the curved stone stairs. These stairs circled around several times, descending somewhere between two and three hundred more feet.

Finally the stairs ended in a small antechamber with a short flight of steps leading up to double doors marked with the Sihedron Star. Large, unlit braziers stood on pedestals to either side of the stairs. Calina made an attempt to search for traps, but Samad was on a mission, and Daellin was shadowing his every step. They young swordsman grabbed the doors and threw them open to reveal an oval shaped room with a golden glowing dome ceiling. A stone altar stood in the center of the room and two giant spider-like creatures leapt in to attack, one from either side of the door. These spiders were quickly identified as the Shriezyx, an evil that the city of Magnimar has battled before and known to inhabit the Irespan. At first quite concerned at fighting these dangerous foes without the axes of Ehlyna, they quickly were victorious, thanks in large part to Calina’s well placed arrows.
Entering the Sihedron Shrine
The center of the room contained a large, seven pointed stone altar with an indention for the Sihedron Star to fit into. In one of the points sat a dark black metal shard, similar in appearance to the metal that Samad’s adamantine sword is made out of. Before the battle with the Shriezyx was even fully concluded, Daellin rushed over to the Shard, and using his cloak, scooped the piece up and shoved it into his pack.

Samad bravely engages his foe!
Daellin faces off against a foe!
One Shriezyx has been defeated!

A Shriezyx burns!

Continuing Story Doc

Session Notes

There was a bit of a flashback sequence at the beginning of the session when I allowed one of the characters to Teleport himself back to Magnimar and purchase nearly every Healing Potion in the city. I allowed this to have taken place while the party camped at the end of the last session (but the Teleporting character's player was not present last time and no one thought of it). I'm sometimes nice like that. I'm sometimes NOT nice like that as well. Just sayin.

Two players missing tonight, they wandered off to explore a potential escape route back to the city.
