Gathering Gear

Tserdain 13 Klarmont

The Grey Company, holed up in the personal suite of Kforedz, continues their planning session on how they are going to follow, pass and subtly maneuver their nemesis, the evil wizard, Golthar, into the Temple of Pflarr in hopes that he weakens the undead guardians, his own forces, or both groups significantly in the inevitable conflict. Kasiex has offered knowledge of some trails that can cut some time and distance off the trek west and Kifein has gone to look in the archive and treasury for any magical items that may help speed the journey up somewhat.

“Okay, so our biggest concern right now is to move. It won’t do us any good if Golthar gets there first and has a chance to clear the place out. Timing is gonna be critical. If they get in a battle like we hope, we need to be on top of that to take advantage of the eventual outcome.

Griffin turns to Kforedz. “We’ll need our gear. Some of it is with your people. Can we get our things back without causing any more of a brouhaha?

“Kasiex, your paths give us a huge advantage. As we’ve seen in the past, Golthar can fly. Traveling underground will let us get closer with less chance of him spotting us.

Griffin continues, “Now there were lots of nasties in the Temple. Remember the strange flying thing that paralyzed Draven? And that Flayed critter was scary nimble at dodging our attacks” He frowns, trying to recall the events of two weeks past. “Remar, you got a better handle on fireball tactics now, right?”

“It wouldn’t hurt to load up on a few vials of holy water - do you and yours sanctify water, Kifein? For rituals and the like? It seems like just the thing to have water that’s been made holy in the tradition of those the temple was originally sacred to.” He wracks his brain for other ideas. “Any foodstuff that we can take - even perishable goods - will be useful in the short term.”

“And if your items have lost their holy glow, bring them to me and I can get them fired back up again. Lord knows we will need all the light we can get, the darkness we’re heading into.”

As Draven prepares to cast the Continual Light spells, Ree steps up and halts him. “I can do this as well, we may very well need your ability to call on your patron’s favor soon enough for more important matters. Let me try this.” The young Half-Elf girl steps up to the gathered items and speaks the magic words. After a few moments and only one mis-cast spell, everyone in the room has an item imbued with magical light. After some thank you’s, Ree turns away, blushing a bit.

Silly friends o yers.  Talkin’ ta thems dat inna there.

“Oh, like you're one to talk!” Remar says.  He sees the questioning looks and says, “Uh, I mean, you all must have been focused pouring over the sketches of the area, planning, and whatnot. You probably didn't notice that Kforedz and Kifein already left for their local archive to try and find us helpful spells, magic items, or a useful means of conveyance.”

As if on cue, Kifein returns carrying an old scroll and some other loose sheets of parchment. “I believe that this may contain a spell that may help. It is for a casting called Quick March, but it is of arcane origin and I cannot read it to be sure. It is written in Hutaakan though and you can read this, right Iris? You could cast it from the scroll? Or maybe study it and learn the spell yourself then you could cast it on the group?” She hands the scroll to Iris and steps back. “As for your other gear, I will make sure it is gathered back up and in its optimal condition. Despite the fact that some of our people are not happy you are here, Pflarr would never allow one to abandon a job of craftsmanship like this. I will take care of it.” She turns to leave, then stops and looks back at the group, “Is there anything else before I leave? It may take me some time to gather all of your gear back up. I will see about scrounging some food for your trek as well. Will you have me accompanying you again this time? I assume the Wildsteward will go to show you the way?”

“While we would of course benefit from your coming, it will be perhaps even more dangerous than our trip to the Vault was. We’re going to be going very near to the heart of where the Traldar gather. I would not force you to come with us under those conditions.”

Kasiex nods in the affirmative to Kifein’s question. “The dead things in the temple - they cared not at all about my arrows. Might there be some way to harm them with a bow? This holy water Draven mentioned, or a different arrowhead shape or material? I...would not like to be close to them again.”

“Griffin’s concerns are valid,” Remar says, bowing toward his friend.  “When we were in the temple there was a strange flying thing that paralyzed Draven:  That was a sensor...a magic eye spell of sorts from the magically imbued one.  When Draven was assaulted, it boiled my blood.  I saw and actually caught the eye up, taunted them through it, and then smashed it.  The taunting...that was a bit too cock-sure.  I apologize; my adrenals were running a bit hot at that moment.  I promise to exercise more caution and humility this go around.”

He looks down at his feet and continues.  “I’ve definitely been studying up since that encounter...consider it the motivator for me putting in so much more book-time.  I believe I do have a better handle on uses where my fireball spell is concerned.  I am still mortified by what could have happened.  I didn’t know -it- could know where I was placing the fireball to deflect it back at us, as I wasn’t targeting it at all and -it- was also much further back.  It was a very close call. The silver lining I guess is that it was quite the learning experience for me; a trial by fire I suppose.” The youth of the Alphatian comes through at his quick, sheepish smile.  “I now have spells of deflection myself and believe I can do the same in similar circumstance.”

Aye, tell ‘em!  sneak up, an’ vape ‘em all unawares wit da fireball.  Otherwise, avoid dat place!

“But yes.  In exercising more caution in this, it is best to use -that- tactic if we can catch everyone off-guard; undead, Golthar, all of them included.  Perhaps we should try our best to manipulate such an ambush?”  He looks around to see what the others think before pointing to the sketches of the trails and looking toward Kasiex.  “Also, as Griffin pointed out, if we take the trails, Golthar may be airborne and see us.  Are the paths covered or by other means allow clandestine travel to shield travellers from such surveillance?”

Iris nods excitedly at Kifein and says, “That sounds incredibly useful, not just for the moment, either.  I can read Hutaakan, but I would feel most comfortable reading it over with you or Kasiex to make sure I’m precisely pronouncing the syllables.  I would dearly love to learn this instead of burning the scroll up,” Iris looks at her friends, “as I think we have the time?”

“Are you a quick-study, Iris?  With Golthar already on the move, do you have time to learn this new spell in but the time it will take for our gear to be prepped?”

Iris says, “Assuming I can puzzle out the Hutaakan verbiage and syntax, with Kasiex’ help, of course; yes---I believe it's possible.”

“I will help, of course” says the Wildsteward; he approaches Iris and the scroll, cocking his head and examining what can be seen of the ancient text without touching it.

Iris goes over the scroll a word at a time, getting Kasiex’ instruction on each word's definition, pronunciation, and enunciation before moving on to the next.

After just a handful of minutes with the scroll and Kasiex’s help, Iris feels confident that she will be able to cast the spell. She makes some crude notes on one of the blank pages at the rear of her grimoire, noting sadly how inferior her notes are to the rest of the information in the tome.

After a short while, Kifein returns with everyone’s gear. It has all been maintained just as promised. “Though some of my people are not happy with the recent news of your involvement in the killing of Hutaakan, they are, always first crafters. Their pledge to work on your equipment is a sacred bond upheld by Pflarr and would never be cast aside, even by something like this. If it was rushed or done shoddily, that was only the fault of me rushing them to complete their tasks. All should be as promised.” She lays the gathered gear out on a table for everyone to inspect. Everything is there, it all looks in top condition, all cleaned and repaired from its previous worn condition.

Coming to an Understanding

Tserdain 13th of Klarmont

Someone's Knocking

The loud talking and shouting outside the door gets a little louder and Marcel has to really lean in on the door to keep it from being pushed open.

Draven says, “I suspect we're only making things worse by not letting them in now…”

Griffin intones, “I agree. Marcel, step aside.”

Remar asks, "Should I raise spell protections for us all?"

Griffin says, “No, I think we gotta just take this one, Remar”

Kasiex proclaims"Whatever the outcome, it shall not be decided by the masses on the other side of that door. Let us seek out Kifein and Kforedz. They will know better."

Remar nods and Kasiex motions to another door on the other side of the chamber and says "Quickly. Let us move."

Draven says, “Lead on. We trust you to keep us safe - as safe as you can, that is.”

Iris asks, "Should i lock the door? Magically? Or does that make us look worse?"

Marcel cries out, "I can't hold this forever."

The Wizard says, "I think it makes us safe and more able to reach Kifein and Kforedz to lock the door and move through the other"

Griffin agrees, “Okay, Kasiex, lead on”

Marcel looks confused, as usual.

Iris says, "Ok I'll lock it and we can run out"

The door is magically locked and Marcel carefully steps away. The still cursed Kasiex leads the way through the door on the far side of the room. The slow moving, Mummy Rot afflicted Hutaakan turns several corners and the group runs into Kifein and Kforedz with a handful of acolytes with them.

Kforedz says "There you are. We have heard that some of the good folk of Byxata have come looking for you."

Iris looks at her feet

Kforedz continues, "We shall speak more of this but I will not allow mob justice to rule here."

Griffin says, “Please lead on”

Draven says, “We appreciate your patience with us.”

Kforedz tells Kifein to take you to her private chamber and she will go and deal with the angry Hutaakan mob. Kifein looks over the group with what might be both sadness and disappointment as she leads you to Kforedz's chambers. The group of Hutaakan acolytes accompany you as well, following behind at a distance. The acolytes do not follow into the chamber but take up guard positions outside. Once in the High Priestess’s chamber, Kifein turns on the group with an angry look in her eye and a bit of a snarl in her voice.

Kasiex begins to say something but then sits quietly on a couch against the wall.

The Ugly Truth

Kifein says "Why did you not tell me of this? Did you think it would not be known?"

Iris says, "It was a terrible mistake, we're...beyond sorry..." Iris trails off

Draven says, “As for why we didn't say anything about it before… Put yourself in our spot. When you first encountered a new group of humans, would the first thing you did be to admit to having been duped into killing their brethren? Our shame silenced our tongues, but we hoped to perhaps earn your respect before we had to admit our guilt.”

Kifein says "Sorry is for when you accidentally step on someone's foot or chew on their tail without realizing it is not your own. This feels, different."

Draven says, “If you will, we can tell you what we shared with Kasiex. The fullness of the tale.”

Kasiex lifts his weary head, "The Traldar. They lied to them. Tricked them."

Draven says, “No tricks, no lies, just the bald truth.”

Kifein listens closely as the story is retold for her benefit.

They Hutaakan priestess paces back and forth as she absorbs this information. She seems considerably conflicted. Her gaze then falls upon the large tome, the Knowledge of the Elders, and the other artifacts that were recovered from the Vault.

Just then, Kforedz returns. She says "So, you have entered the valley. Disrupted our way of life. Brought evil into our midsts. And now it is revealed that you have killed Hutaakan without mercy.” The High Priestess continues,  "I assume the Traldar convinced you to help them slaughter our priests that day?"

Draven says, “Indeed. And we were well primed to expect our own enemies, not Hutaaka.”

Remar says, “We were also amidst a battle, where unfortunately the Hutaaka took us for Traldar as well”

Kforedz listens carefully, one eye narrowed and the opposite ear upright.

Draven says, “Would that I could show you the likeness of those who fought us the whole way into your valley. The Traldar descriptions of your people made us all but certain they were talking about our own foes.”

Griffin says, “Hey Ree, can you do that for Draven? Show Kforedz what a Gnoll looks like?”

Ariadne says "NO i am sorry, I cannot do that."

Draven says, “Suffice to say, the descriptions of the primitive Traldar were poor enough, rough enough, to make it seem they were describing our own enemies, not those who would soon be our friends.”

The two Hutaakan priestesses listen carefully, nodding and shaking their heads at different parts.

Remar asks Iris to translate for him and recounts the scene of how everything went down. The Alphatian tells this and then recounts why they entered the valley, how they came to the Traldar camp after the battle. How they sought out the Hutaakan after that, in the hopes that they could liberate the valley and maybe even reunite its people, the Traldar and Hutaakan.

Here for a Purpose

Kforedz says "I can see how you were confused. And yes, I will admit, we have not always treated fairly with the Traldar, especially as of late. I can understand the confusing and difficult situation you were in. Since that time you have proven your honor and truthfulness. My people may take some time to understand this, but as I said before, I truly believe that you are here for a purpose.”

Draven says, “Is there a custom among your people of restitution - help me here, Iris - of weregild, or making the family of those we have harmed, whole?”

She smiles and then turns her gaze on Kasiex. "Now, let us see what we can do for this young pup.”

Iris does her best to help translate where she can

Kifein says "Yes, Priest of Truth. There is a way to honor the families that were wronged."

Kforedz says "Young mage, will you cast the spell to remove the curse?"

Remar says, "I most certainly will. I would have done it sooner had not this...young pup”, he winks at Kassiex, "run off to play in the woods."

Kasiex lowers his head in shame. He says, "I am sorry. I should be chastised and forced to wear the cone of shame."

Remar asks, "Um...hey Iris. Is uh....winking. Does it not mean the same in Hutaakan?"

Kasiex glances at a leather and wood contraption hanging on the wall across the room, it looks like a oddly shaped bellows folded up. Seeing this, Kforedz says "Be well, good Kasiex. You are forgiven for your pride."

Remar casts his spell and Kforedz quickly follows up and uses her divine magic to cure the disease. A strange look crosses her face. "That is strange. My magic did not work to cure the disease on this one." She looks at Draven. "Will your gods grant their magic to heal one of our kind?"

Draven says, “I can only but try,” then lays hands on the center of the diseased tissue. The black tissue starts to recede. It dries up and flakes off, revealing pink healthy flesh beneath it. Kasiex looks quite ridiculous at this point though, as he has lost quite a bit of fur.

Remar whispers to Draven and Iris sighs in relief. Draven responds to Remar in kind

Kifein quickly then administers some healing spells to Kasiex to help with the damage the curse had wrought. Kforedz says "So I am still studying the Knowledge of Elders but am sure I will find the answer I am looking for soon. Whatever that is it will require the water you recovered from the Singing Pool as well as the Silver Bowl of Pflarr. You have said you did not see the bowl when you entered the temple, is that right?

Iris nods and says, "That is correct"

Kforedz muses, “Hmm. That bowl must be recovered before we can move on. What are your thoughts on that? I will send Kifein and Kasiex to the temple to look for this bowl. Will you accompany them again?”

Draven says, “Normally I would ask for even more help - the temple is remarkably corrupted - but I fear few of your people would trust us to travel through Traldar held territory.”

Griffin says, “We are grateful for the opportunity to continue working with you”

Kforedz says, “I do not know of more of my people that WOULD go. I could order some of the acolytes to accompany you, but sadly they would not be very useful. They are still just learning their roles and fear they would be more of a hindrance than help.”

Remar 's brow furrows

Kforedz continues, “I would go but I need to figure out the necessary rituals to cleanse the valley.”

Draven says, “Would that they were further trained - to have the faithful of your people there to begin rituals of cleansing.”

Remar says, "I mentioned it previously when we were brought here, but you must know says, There are powerful beings of unlife in that temple. If they have the bowl, it could be difficult to attain."

Kforedz says, “When I come to the temple for the ritual, I will bring them with me, but I fear that to have us all there before it is time would be dangerous that close to the Traldar”

Remar says, "Additionally, we have Golthar right on your doorstep! We MUST deal with him first He's brought 20 - 25 with him. He will likely try to grow this number in enslaved cohorts."

Kforedz says, “You are free to remain here in my chambers while you continue to rest and recover and plan what your next step shall be. I will leave my acolytes outside to keep you protected. Kifein and Kaisex are free to come and go but, for your safety, I would recommend you remain here.”

Remar continues, explaining more about the Yellow Wizard, "I also fear that if he learns of the friction here between the 2 factions, he may use that against us if we wait. Perhaps convince the Traldar for instance to help him invade here. That's what I would do tactically."

Iris suggests, "How about we drop a messenger's bag in their path? With falsified documents? Like a journal?"

Ready to Hit the Trail Again

Kforedz takes the heavy, ancient tome and excuses herself to continue examining it. Kifein remains to help you plan. Kasiex perks up at the continued mention of Golthar. He says, “One of my fellow Wildstewards reported in this morning that this new group has traveled further to the west. At their current rate of travel, they will likely make the outcropping by nightfall.

Kifein says "I could look into finding some way to speed your travels possibly."

Draven says, “It may not matter in our decision, Kasiex, but if we can find out if he is sticking to the roads or going overland, or if he appears to have a destination in mind…”

Kifein says "There are some scrolls in the archive that may work. I can look if you like."

Draven says, “Yes, please do.”

Kifein says "It will take me some time to find though." She hurries off to go look for some scrolls.

Kasiex tells of a secret path he knows that utilizes some mountain paths. Some of the routes are difficult, but not much more than the path taken to the Vault of Elders. The Company continues to plan their next move while Kifein is still gone looking for something to help with the journey. Remar votes for Kasiex' recommendation to travel through the mountain paths

Trouble in Byxata

Tserdain 13 Klarmont

A Commotion Outside the Door

A perfect day. A perfect night’s sleep. A perfect breakfast.

And then a worn and diseased Kasiex enters the room announcing bad news with potentially even worse news behind him, out in the hallway. Several heavy blows can be heard on the thick double doors leading into this chamber. The exhausted Kasiex leans up against the door, not that he could do much to stop it from opening in his current condition.

Griffin acts, “Marcel, Stephan, get the door! Ree - hide. If we’re outnumbered you’re our ace in the hole.” Griffin turns to Kasiex. In Traldar, “What’s going on? What happened?”

Kasiex growls, “What happened is what I need to know! I thought we were allies! Friends, even! But a hunting party returns with stories of invaders to the valley, of Traldar and new strangers who slaughtered many of them in a ravine.  These strangers...they’re talking about are you! The survivors...they want justice.  And the others here were not exactly happy to have you here in the first place.”

The Hutaakan continues, “Was...was this all a lie? Some kind of Traldar plot? Why would you do this to us, who have only helped you?” The door shudders and thuds, Kasiex’ worn down strength offering little to support it; but he tries to hold as he waits for his “friends” to tell him something, anything that might help explain what happened.  Kasiex stumbles away from the door as Marcel and Stephan step up to take his place.  He catches himself on a piece of furniture to stay upright, looking at the Company imploringly.

Griffin sighs, then shakes his head. “Yes, it’s true. We, that is, I - I did it.” He swallows, then continues. “When we arrived in the valley, we met a Traldar scouting party. They showed us friends of theirs, slain in battle, and accused us of the crime. We tried to convince them that we were innocent of the attack. They were reluctant to believe us. Finally, they told us of their foes. Our words were not clear, and their description led us wrongly to think that some of our enemies had followed us into the valley. I volunteered to help them by fighting beside them in a show of good faith. Only when the battle was to start did we see that their enemy was not our enemy, but Hutaakans. To my shame, I still went through with the attack.”

Griffin straightens up. “So yes, Kasiex, I am guilty. We have tried to make up for my mistake by aiding you in fighting the curse that plagues this valley. I don’t know if that makes any difference.” He motions for Stephan and Marcel to step away from the door.

“I will submit to your justice, if that is what you want.” He puts his hands in front of him, ready to be bound.

Draven steps up, “You can’t shoulder the blame for this yourself, Griffin, noble as it might be for you to try. We all participated, our narrow-minded thinking leading us to believe that the evil in this valley - the undead - would be being caused by your people rather than the Traldar by simple expedient of their being human.”

“We were led to think that those we would be facing were creatures who had been pursuing us, who had ambushed us on our way here - we only just managed to escape them. In retrospect, you bear them little resemblance and are a good and civilized people, which we only learned late, to our collective shame.”

“I would only ask that your leaders take into consideration our actions of late, our work to restore this land and its health, and how we have treated with you and Kifein. We can only hope that you will speak on our behalf, honestly and truthfully, and that our return to the village here with the book that we promised we would recover will act as our bona fides, that you can accept our apologies.”

“I think I can speak for all of us when I say that it remains our intention to continue the work we have undertaken to restore your home to wholesomeness and health, and your people to their holy places.”

Remar watches the scene as it unfolds.

Hope yer ready ta be bound once again, slave.  Wonder wat cleanin’ doggy latrines’ll be like?

No!  Not that!  They just need to hear us out.  That’s all.  It’s...it’s just like Draven inferred last night...

Remar continues the thought, by voicing it.  “You all are right.  We can not seek redemption until we have faced our sins ourselves.  Only then can we lay them bare, before those whose transgressions we have suffered.”

Ooo, good tactic:  Bone-breath!  Lend meh thy ’ar!  Have thoueth eh sword s’ ey may falleth on through it fer thee?

He sighs internally and checks Draven’s gaze before going on to make sure he summarized that right from their previous talk. Draven nods, and leaves room for him to speak.

“Kasiex,” the Wizard continues, meeting the Hunter’s eyes.  “As you have said, you have travelled with us.  Struggled with us.  Bled with us.  Suffered with us!  To include my horrible attempts at Traldar communication,” he softens and smirks briefly, with a thankful nod to Iris for letting him know how badly he’d been mucking that up and diffusing the situation when needed.  “I studied, long and hard not just to restore Iris to full health and wellness as we did last night, but for you as well.   I...we consider you a friend, Kasiex.”

Where be all dis goin, Rema’?  Canna we just light ‘em o’ fire, fly out da window, an’ be on our merry way?

We’re not like Golthar.  Wait, that’s it!

“I’m not finished yet,” the Alphatian seems to say to himself, seeming to steel him for what’s to follow.  “Even if this were put aside, there is still perhaps one more true and valid point of distinction:  Golthar and his followers will never face their sins, or even attempt to apologize to you for any immoral acts they commit, as we are now.”

Yep.  Yer right.  Sorry.  Canna we go, now?

Remar finishes, “I think you know we are being true.  And being...enslaved here, or worse, is not going to fix the current situation with Golthar, whom is now confirmed to be on your doorstep!  Ask your Elders if we can prove ourselves to you...to you all.  Tell them about Golthar.  Ask them if us removing him and his ilk from here, in addition to reclaiming this valley back from the walking dead would prove a suitable penance.”

Are ya mad?  Wait.  Donna answer dat.  It’ll only serve ta confuse us...er...ey mean ‘ya’ even more, ha!

Kasiex sighs.  “Deceivers, the Traldar are.” He pauses, touching the unstrung bow poking up over his shoulder. “Most of them.” Forcing himself to straighten, he gathers himself. “It may be that cooler heads will prevail. No one will doubt that they lied to you, and you have done a great service in returning the Knowledge of the Elders to Kfordez. Might be enough.”

Draven nods and lowers his head, “My patron is the goddess of justice. She will see us through this trial. My fear is that those who were pursuing us - we must seem like wanted men to you, pursued here by all manner of folk - are more like to the Traldar than they are to you, and deceit seems to be their way. I fear they will either find you here and bring trouble, or that they will rally the Traldar to their cause. I don’t know that we have much time to prove our case before they manage to get the upper hand.”

“Draven,” Remar says, eyes also searching for Marcel, “are you suggesting they may engineer and bring to bear something akin to a full-scale battle?  Kasiex, do the Hutaakan have more traditional battlemages per say...Like me?”

Seeing Kasiex nod ‘no’ and make mention of only the priests, Remar chews his bottom lip and says to everyone, “Do we need to make quick plans to make Byxata defensible against an attack?”

More shouts and banging on the outer door make Remar realize that an “attack” may be coming from within the walls of Byxata, not from from afar. Marcel shoulders his shield and hefts his spear as he shifts to help reinforce the door.
