Wrapping Up In Rifllian

Lunadain 9th Yarthmont

Arranging for Supplies

The Grey Company decides to stay in Rifllian for another day, at least to let the storm's pass. Ree and Remar return from the shop of Othar Longbranch, a local Elvish enchanter and tell the rest of the Company that he has agreed to purchase the handful of magical arrows and identify the found magical items but that it will probably take the rest of the night to complete. He has identified the green potion as one of Slow Fall. Ree also shares that the wizard has several interesting magical items for sale as well. She piques Marcel's interest by describing a magical spear from the wizards shop.

The Company follows her back to Othar's shop and they are invited inside to peruse his wares. Othar and his wife, Jala, have a different Elf look to them than the rest of the Callarii Elves. They are tall and thin with golden hair and jet black eyes and say they are Wendar Elves, from far to the north. The Elves sell Marcel a magical spear and Draven buys a magical ring of protection and a pair of boots that allow the wearer to levitate. The Company discusses having their armor enchanted and Othar agrees to do it but says it will take up to a week to finish the whole order. After some discussion, the Company decides they do not have a week to wait. Stephan is worried that Golthar may get out ahead of them or find some other way to track down what lies at the end of the magical tapestry map.

Some mundane supplies are purchased at the local general store, mostly Elvish waybread, which is magical food designed to be compact and lightweight, and it never spoils. Several lengths of Elvish rope is also purchased in anticipation of traveling through the mountains sometime soon.

Something Magical In The Air

Othar Longbranch arrives in the morning with the newly identified magical items. Privately he goes over the details of what he discovered. The amulet shields the wearer from magical detection and observation. He offers to buy it outright from the Company for 9000$ though it is deemed useful and not sold. The magical sword that Burik has been using is called Silver Eye and in addition to being magically enchanted to improve its combat usefulness, it can also imbue its wielder with the ability to see those under the power of invisibility. Othar says it is probably worth somewhere in the neighborhood of 25000$ but is not interested in buying it. Burik happily straps the blade back on, though Griffin eyes him harshly as he does this. The final item Othar presents is Wyrtung's knife that Ree had been carrying since leaving the ancient mound. Othar says the silver blade, which he calls The Point of the Cold Star, is highly magical and enchanted with spells to make it more useful in combat. It also insulated the bearer against extreme temperatures, particularly colder ones. Othar says that the knife contains further enchantments but he was not able to decipher them. He believes that it possesses very old, powerful magic and could possibly be classified as an Artifact even. He offers to buy it from the party for 25000$ on the spot, but again, the Company believes it to be too useful of a tool to part with. Ree shoves it back into her belt, a very proud look on her face.

Most of the members of the Grey Company take some time to visit Prestelle once more and pay their quarterly taxes. Marcel, who found that he spent too much on his new magical spear, is unable to pay and is prepared to leave town without taking care of it. Draven happily informs him that he will remind Marcel about it later so he doesn't forget his civic duty and pay his due.

Leaving Town

Marcel spends some time that morning spreading stories that the Grey Company will be heading out of town toward Kelvin with the rest of the Susikyn group. He hopes to throw off their trail in case anyone had been keeping tabs on them. The Company plans to head south and east, then after a few miles, leave the road and skirt around Rifllian through the woods and emerge north of town before heading toward Verge and the mountains beyond.

Just as the group is ready to break off into the woods, a lone rider is spotted following them. The Company sets a trap and captures the man. He reveals himself as Gactis, a traveler, but before he can be interrogated further, he manages to drink a potion of invisibility and flees. Griffin calls for Burik to use his enchanted sword so he can see him to chase.
